How We Evaluate
SEO Agencies

Othlist exists to help companies find credible SEO partners without the noise of paid placements or manipulated rankings. Every agency listed is evaluated through a structured research process designed to prioritise real expertise, proven outcomes, and trustworthy client feedback.

We operate independently. Agencies cannot pay to be listed, influence their ranking, or sponsor placement.

Our process at a glance

01

Agency Discovery & Dataset Construction

The first stage focuses on identifying agencies that operate in the SEO space globally.

How we find agencies

Our research team compiles agencies through multiple sources including search engine results for commercial SEO queries, established industry directories, conference speaker lists and SEO communities, agency case studies and partner networks, professional platforms such as LinkedIn and Crunchbase, review platforms such as Clutch and G2, and industry publications and rankings.

No paid submissions

To avoid bias, agencies are not sourced from submissions or paid applications. Inclusion begins only after independent discovery by our research team.

Baseline eligibility

  • SEO as a core service offering
  • A functioning website with service documentation
  • Public evidence of client work or case studies
  • A verifiable team or company presence

Agencies that operate primarily as resellers, marketplaces, or affiliate networks are excluded.

02

Data Collection & Evidence Gathering

Once identified, our research team collects structured information from publicly available sources.

Agency fundamentals

  • Years in operation
  • Company location and team size
  • Core services and specialisation
  • Industry focus

Proof of expertise

  • Published case studies
  • Demonstrated SEO campaigns
  • Content authored by the team
  • Conference presentations or industry recognition

Operational transparency

  • Pricing or engagement models
  • Service documentation
  • Process transparency

External validation

  • Client reviews from verified platforms
  • Client logos and testimonials
  • Public partnerships and certifications

We do not rely on self-submitted claims alone. All data points must be verifiable through independent sources. When information cannot be confirmed publicly, it is not included in scoring.

03

Independent Review & Validation

Before scoring begins, each agency undergoes a verification process to confirm it is actively operating, offers genuine SEO services, has real client engagement history, and maintains a credible public presence.

Website analysis

We examine the agency's website architecture, service pages, case studies, and published content.

Team verification

Leadership and team members are cross-referenced against professional profiles.

Case study validation

We confirm whether case studies include measurable results and identifiable projects.

Review authenticity

Client reviews are compared across multiple platforms to identify inconsistencies. Agencies that fail verification are removed from the dataset.

04

Multi-Dimensional Scoring Framework

Each agency is evaluated across five independent dimensions, designed to balance expertise, credibility, and real-world outcomes.

1

SEO Expertise

Measures technical depth and demonstrated understanding of search — service specialisation, technical SEO capability, thought leadership, and evidence of advanced SEO practices.

2

Proven Results

Evaluates the agency's ability to generate measurable outcomes — documented case studies, traffic growth evidence, revenue or lead generation impact, and campaign scope. We prioritise case studies with clear metrics rather than vague claims.

3

Pricing Transparency

Assesses whether agencies communicate their engagement models clearly — pricing ranges, package structures, and realistic scope descriptions. Agencies that obscure pricing score lower.

4

Client Communication & Delivery

Measures operational clarity and client collaboration — process documentation, reporting transparency, onboarding clarity, and communication expectations.

5

Review Credibility

Client feedback evaluated through review aggregation and verification across Clutch, Google Reviews, G2, and Trustpilot. We prioritise reviews with detailed project context and identifiable client organisations.

05

Review Platform Cross-Verification

Client feedback plays an important role in our evaluation but is handled carefully.

Our cross-verification process

  • Identifying duplicate reviews across platforms
  • Filtering anonymous ratings without project detail
  • Examining review distribution patterns
  • Comparing review timelines for anomalies

Agencies with unusually inflated or suspicious review activity may be flagged for additional scrutiny.

06

Editorial Oversight & Quality Control

All agency profiles are reviewed by our editorial team before publication.

What we check

  • Factual accuracy across all data points
  • Completeness of collected data
  • Consistency with our scoring methodology

If critical information is missing, the profile remains unpublished until verification is complete. Agencies are not notified prior to listing, ensuring independence from external influence.

07

Ranking Integrity & Independence

Othlist operates under strict editorial independence.

Three non-negotiable rules

  • Agencies cannot pay for rankings
  • Sponsored placements are not accepted
  • Rankings cannot be influenced through partnerships

Our business model is separate from directory inclusion. This ensures agencies are ranked based solely on merit.

08

Continuous Monitoring & Re-evaluation

The SEO industry evolves rapidly. Agency profiles are regularly reviewed to ensure information remains accurate.

Re-evaluation includes

  • Monitoring new case studies and published work
  • Reviewing updated client feedback
  • Verifying continued operation
  • Assessing new service capabilities

Agencies may move up or down in rankings as new evidence emerges.

09

Removal Policy

Agencies may be removed from Othlist if they engage in deceptive marketing practices, accumulate consistent negative client feedback, lose operational credibility, or request paid placement influence.

Our goal

To maintain a directory that businesses can trust — one where every listing has earned its place through demonstrated quality.

Why this matters

A directory you can actually trust

Most agency directories rely on paid placements or self-submitted claims. Othlist takes a different approach.

Every listing is built on independent research, verified evidence, and structured evaluation — so companies can make informed decisions when choosing an SEO partner.
